What's a good read?
There’s no doubt, reading promotes brain development, imagination, teaches language and emotions, and strengthens relationship. Reading books for kids spark curiosity about the world and create memories.
How does one choose the right books for kids? There’s no easy way. Not all children will love the same books. Here is a simple guide that can help you find and select the right books for your child.
Age-appropriateness
Babies: Brightly colored pictures of simple objects attract babies and toddlers. Books made out of indestructible materials are appropriate for very young children.
Preschoolers: Choose nursery rhyme books and those with pictures of familiar objects and experiences.
Early readers: For children learning to read, choose books with simple to complex storylines and character development. Encourage your child to read topics that satisfy their curiosity.
Older children: Specific interest, consider your child’s personality traits and preferences. Informational books or a novel can be interesting.
Recommendations
Look at recommendations at bookstores. Some publishers also indicate on the cover which age or grade level the book is most suitable for. If choosing for older children, look for books that will help develop comprehension and vocabulary. Themes and possibilities of learning can also be read on cover summaries and reviews.
Appeal
Let your child’s interest guide you. Younger children are generally interested in life experiences. But when they get older, fantasy becomes more important. Use your gut reaction and be creative. Look for illustrations that may catch your child’s eye.
Preference
What’s your child favorite topic to discuss with you? Is he into dinosaurs? Planets? Magic? If you know your child has a favorite author or book, try to find similar books or those coming from the same publisher.
Choosing books for kids does not need to be a daunting task. Make reading a priority. Always inspire your kids to read books.
