What's a good read?
Meet the unstoppable Charisse Rapadas, also known as Filtercha, a multifaceted artist who has conquered music production and the world of writing. Her journey from being a celebrated DJ in Cebu City to an accomplished author is inspiring. Her boundless passion for music and creativity takes center stage in her debut novel.
In this short interview, get to know more about Charisse and what inspired her to publish her book.
What is the title of your book, and what is it about?
My debut novel is called Lucy Fruit Love. It’s the first installment of a three-part series. The novel delves into the extraordinary journey of encountering the enigmatic Lucy Fruit, a magical and transformative experience that leads to profound self-discovery and love in unconventional circumstances. While some might compare it to a psychedelic adventure, the story steers clear of delving into philosophical abstractions. Instead, it embraces a raw and unfiltered perspective, presenting a humanizing portrayal of the protagonist’s extraordinary encounters and emotional growth.
Can you tell us a little background about yourself?
I guess I can call myself an artist. I’m a DJ, bedroom producer, and entrepreneur constantly exploring new avenues to express my artistic passions. I’m also working as a full-time business consultant for several companies mostly dealing with business setup, recruitment and financial strategies. Recently, I got my hands into air-dry clay, creating unique accessories, and I’m slowly building my brand called Le Soleil
Do you still DJ?
Lately, I’ve been focusing on playing at private events. In Cebu, the local demand mostly leans towards jukebox-style DJs, not that it’s bad or inferior, it’s actually more challenging for me, but I’m looking to carve my own path and play music that truly resonates with me. While I haven’t actively pursued many opportunities yet, I’m open to exploring new avenues where I can showcase my unique style.
I did attempt to organize my own events, but juggling this endeavor alongside my other responsibilities proved to be quite challenging and exhausting. Nevertheless, I remain enthusiastic about my passion for music and DJing, and I’m hopeful that I’ll find the right balance in the future to further pursue opportunities to share my love for music with others.
Can you tell us something about your book’s genre?
While the general genre of the book is fiction, it’s also giving a romance novel vibe with a hint of humor.
What is the target age group of your book?
This book is undoubtedly intended for an adult audience as it candidly explores mature themes. The main characters are in their mid to late 20s, which will probably resonate with readers within that age group.
Who are your favorite authors?
I guess I don’t have a particular favorite author as my reading preferences evolve over time. I find myself drawn to books that pique my curiosity and resonate with me during various stages of life. I do love a good dystopian setting so I read a lot of Aldous Huxley’s and George Orwell’s works. I developed a fondness for lyrical novels and romance back in college, which led me to explore Paolo Coelho’s books. I enjoyed Dave Holmes’ twisted humor and my current obsession with Hannah Gadsby.
Are there any characters in your book based on real people?
A lot of the characters in the book are predominantly inspired by real people. It adds depth and authenticity to their personas. I guess drawing from firsthand experiences makes it easier to create nuanced and believable individuals within the narrative.
When did you realize you wanted to write a book?
To be honest, the idea of publishing a book was beyond my wildest dreams. Public speaking isn’t my forte, and I tend to lose my audience mid speech. I just discovered that I have my way with words when I wrote our band’s first original song back in 2010. It was then that I discovered a natural aptitude for expressing myself through written words. Then I started journaling after an immersive experience back in 2018 that made me realize that my thoughts possess a unique blend of intrigue and humor. This realization ignited a spark within me, encouraging me to explore the possibility of putting my words onto paper and perhaps sharing my stories with the world.
What is the feeling of finally getting your first book published?
Elated and anxious at the same time. I have no idea how people are going to receive my filthy mind. I’m only holding on to the idea that we are living in a progressive and open-minded era now. The modern world seems to embrace diversity and various perspectives compared to five years ago. Society has evolved to the next level and people are more accepting having been exposed to an array of experiences and narratives.
When will be the launch of your book?
I’m launching my book on Aug 6 at Cebu Lit Festival in Ayala Central Bloc.
Where will your books be available, and how much is it?
My book is now available for pre-order in Gully Books and it will be available at Cebu Lit Festival in Ayala Central Bloc. The pre-order has a discounted price of P620 but upon launching it will be at its full price of P720. I’m also working on converting it into an e-book so hopefully it will be available on Amazon.
What advice can you give to aspiring writers?
Develop a system that works for you and integrate it into your routine. It’s so easy to get off track and delay the process but you just need to stick to your system and push through. Also, utilize your phone’s note app and write your thoughts anytime, anywhere making sure that no brilliant idea or important details slip away.
Can you share with us your favorite line or verse from your book?
“I’m not looking for anything serious at the moment. I don’t suppose I’m capable of being in any relationship in my current state.” Peter stated firmly.
I played the chill girl card and responded in a deep yet calm voice.
“Cool, me too!”
This verse is from the Chapter titled “I Lied.” It captures a raw and relatable moment that many of us experience. I mean how often have we lost ourselves in the pursuit of playing the game? It’s a powerful and honest reflection.
