What's a good read?
As of this April and May, some Filipino applicants may have already received their college admission results. Many Filipinos dream of studying abroad. In the family-centric Philippines, a finished college education is an important milestone. With the growing number of opportunities overseas, many top universities require students to write admission essays or personal statements. However, many students are intimidated by this writing process.
A new anthology from Bookshelf PH, a publishing house in the Philippines focused on books and ebooks, aims to steward this. The anthology is titled, “Taking Flight: Successful College Admission Essays from International Students,” and naturally aims to compile the best writing from Filipino students who successfully pursued undergraduate or graduate school abroad.
Bookshelf PH seeks to showcase their works as reference in order to guide aspiring Filipinos when they write their own compelling admission essays.
Moreover, the book will include a foreword from Professor Francisco L. Roman, who received his Doctorate in Business Administration at Harvard University and is an esteemed adjunct professor at the Asian Institute of Management. The anthology will be managed by Bookshelf PH’s Editorial Team: Mio Borromeo (Editor-in-Chief), Pancho Dizon (Executive Editor), and Leanne Tria (Managing Editor).
According to Mio Borromeo, “Our intention with this book is to give those students a huge leg up by showing them essays that have worked, securing those students opportunities abroad. They might not be the best written essays, but they have to make compelling arguments that answer the question, ‘Why you?’ When our student readers see these examples, they can move forward with confidence knowing that what they’re writing is at least moving in the right direction.”
Within this goal, each submission should have been used to successfully gain admission into a foreign undergraduate or graduate university.
Taking Flight dovetails with Bookshelf PH’s expertise in non-fiction. The publishing house has published many non-fiction books, including Opening the Archipelago: The Story of Blockchain in the Philippines; Healthy Buhay, Happy Mama: Risa Hontiveros Journey through Motherhood, and Fearless Filipinas, which included a foreword from Vice President Leni Robredo.
