For some, writing and publishing their book is a dream.  The challenge is being able to find a publisher. This pursuit has been a challenge for self-published and indie authors here in the Philippines. Finding a publisher and getting support is hard but being an NBDB registered author may help you get access to publishing the book you’ve always dreamed of.

What is NBDB?

The National Book Development Board (NBDB) is the board created thru Republic Act 8047 or the Book Publishing Industry Development Act to give importance to the role of books in nation-building.  It also implements the National Book Policy to improve the book publishing industry in the Philippines.

NBDB Registered Indie Authors

So, what does it mean to be NBDB registered? Noticing an influx of authors flexing their newly NBDB-registered status on social media, this intrigued the Gully Books staff. We reached out to some of them to find out what the fuss is all about.

Below are answers (unedited) to the questions we sent these talented independent authors. Be sure to support them by getting their books and following them on social media.

How did it feel when you finally had your first book published?

It always feels great and honored to have my books published.

How did you get published?

Of course, first, I had to finish my script, edit, proofread, and lay out it and finally make a book cover. Look for a publisher. And then transact with the best offer in the best quality possible.

As an indie author, were there any challenges looking for a publisher?

Yes! Haha. There were times when publishers take me for granted or give me less attention because I only print less copies like 20, 30, and sometimes only 15. Haha! But that doesn’t stop me from believing in my art. I know someday, I’d be able to publish thousands of copies and they will  be sold out!

Where did you find your publisher?

I know a lot of publishing houses and I conducted a canvass and chose the most budget-friendly one. My third book is yet to be released next month.

How did you become an NBDB registered author? What was the process like? What does being registered mean to you?

I found out about it via post by my writer Facebook friend and I entered the link right away to register, wait for confirmation in e-mail, and get verified. I had to wait for 3 weeks again to have the physical copy. Being a registered author is a fulfillment to me as an indie author.

What advice can you give to aspiring writers/authors?

Keep on doing what you love. And keep that passion in your heart.

Mark Gonzales

What is the title of your latest book, and what is it about?

My first novel is Sol at Luna (A Solar Eclipse Love Story). The novel is about the love of the God of the sun and the goddess of the moon. But fate doesn’t allow them to be together, thus being put into eternal sleep. The story revolves around the love that requires sacrifice. Sol and Luna continued the story of the Sun and Moon. They are two hopeless romantic people that fell into each other’s arms.

How did it feel when you finally had your first book published?

It felt like a dream since I put a lot of effort into getting it published. The book contains all my love, dedication, blood, sweat, and tears. Until this day, I feel like everything was a good dream.

How did you get published?

The first step that I had to take was to finish my novel first, of course. After that I finished writing it, I approached my friend, Aizel. She is my super supportive friend, and she was the one who edited my manuscript. After that, I asked my artists and illustrators, Hannah and Khamer, to make my book covers. When everything was ready, I approached my publishing house and got it printed.

As an indie author, were there any challenges looking for a publisher?

Yes, I had a lot of difficulties finding my publisher. Since it was a pandemic, many publishers became close; thanks to God, I found my publisher and considered it my home.

Where did you find your publisher?

I found my publisher online. They were so accommodating to us indie authors, and they are so dedicated to their work and craft.

How did you become an NBDB registered author? What was the process like? What does being registered mean to you?

I became an NBDB registered author when my mentor, a published and registered author at NBDB. Her name is Kristel Shin, and she encouraged me to apply. The process was easy, and I was immediately approved to be an NBDB registered author. Being an NBDB registered author means a lot to me since I am being recognized in my country, and I feel all my efforts and sacrifices are worth it.

What advice can you give to aspiring writers/authors?

Continue to blood on paper. Let your heart and soul do the writing and give your characters a chance to live inside your head. Let them breathe, feel and think. That is how a story comes alive.
