The Philippines will send books to the London Book Fair 2022, which will take place this month at the Olympia London exhibition center in Kensington, for the first time, according to the National Book Development Board (NBDB). The fair, dubbed one of the world’s largest international rights trade fairs, will be from April 5 to 7.

Paolo Herras, the founder of Komiket, will attend the three-day event to represent Filipino creatives. He will engage with international publishers, literary agents, and producers to promote Filipino literature, with NBDB Executive Director Charisse Aquino-Tugade and NBDB Project Lead of the National Book Database Kevin Dy.

“Filipino Comics is one of the most underrepresented and exploited genres,“ he said. “We’re not studied in colleges or universities, we’re not found in the K-12 curriculum, national writer’s workshops, or most national awards.“

At the Philippine booth, diverse Philippine titles will be on display, ready to be shared with the rest of the world. Fifty-two legends and folklore in the form of graphic novels, young adult and children’s literature, and contemporary fiction by Filipino authors and publishers will be at the London Book Fair 2022. This catalog is appropriate given that the LBF is an event that brings together international publishers and film, television, theater, and music producers seeking compelling works for global adaptation.

“But we are already crossing territories, getting picked up by international publishers around the world, and venturing forth into live-action films, animation, content platforms, video games, toys, and other merchandise. So we’re mighty proud to be representing the Philippines in the London Book Fair. It’s about time.”

Books Philippines is located in West Kensington, London, at Olympia Exhibition Centre, Booth 2A01.
